Carles & Sofia Piano Duo return to Auditori de Girona with a program of premieres and powerful reinterpretations
After eight years away from their home city’s main stage, Carles & Sofia Piano Duo returned to the Auditori de Girona with a sold-out concert that reaffirmed their status as one of today’s most compelling four-hands piano duos. Known for their exceptional musical synergy and artistic depth, the duo offered an innovative program that brought together powerful reinterpretations and four world premieres written especially for them.
The recital opened with Camille Saint-Saëns’ Danse macabre, setting a dramatic tone that gave way to Variations on a Theme by Ludovico Einaudi by Catalan composer Andreu Diport, a subtle and meditative tribute. Maurice Ravel’s iconic Bolero followed, adapted masterfully for four hands, and was succeeded by TNT, an explosive work by David Basomba.
The program also featured three other premieres: Ballad on The Queen’s Gambit by Marc Little, Horizons by Masanori Takeuchi, and Max Richter’s Fantasy by Miquel de Jorge Artells. Each of these new compositions was written specifically for Carles & Sofia and for this concert, reflecting the duo’s ongoing commitment to championing contemporary voices.
This homecoming performance was not only a celebration of musical excellence but also a demonstration of the duo’s profound connection to today’s composers and to the city where their journey began.
